  • How is this different from a container?

    Kiln uses OCI layers for distribution but does not put your shell inside a container. Your files, editor and processes stay native; only tool resolution is managed. That is why startup is measured in milliseconds.

  • Is it stable?

    It is alpha. The file format is still moving and there will be breaking changes. It is genuinely useful today, but pin your version.

  • Is it open source?

    Yes, and it will stay that way. The CLI and the resolver are open source under Apache 2.0.
